Minnesota pulled level or close twice in the fourth quarter at Huntington Bank Stadium, and both times UCLA needed one snap to get away again. Ty Dieffenbach hit Aidan Mizell for 75 yards nine seconds after a Gophers touchdown, then did it again 10 seconds after a Gophers field goal. No. 8 UCLA won 34-20 and is 9-0.

Mizell caught two passes all day. Both went 75 yards, both went for touchdowns, and together they decided the game. Full prices and line history are on the game page.

How it was won

UCLA opened with a 37-yard Mateen Bhaghani field goal at 12:20 of the first quarter, and Wayne Knight's 1-yard run made it 10-0 at 4:48. Minnesota answered in the second quarter with a 3-yard Darius Taylor run, and Luke Drzewiecki tied it 10-10 with a 38-yard field goal as the half expired.

Dieffenbach found Noah Fox-Flores for 27 yards at 9:07 of the third to put UCLA up 17-10. Minnesota drew level early in the fourth when Drake Lindsey threw 4 yards to George Rohl at 12:50.

The tie lasted nine seconds. Mizell scored from 75 yards at 12:41 for 24-17. Drzewiecki's 36-yard field goal at 7:31 cut it to 24-20, and Mizell scored from 75 yards again at 7:21 for 31-20. Bhaghani's 36-yard field goal at 3:18 closed the scoring.

The box score shows an efficient but uneven UCLA passing game. Dieffenbach was 8 of 16 for 303 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Half his yardage came on the two Mizell catches, and Semaj Morgan added a 54-yard reception. Knight carried 18 times for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Anthony Woods added 29 yards on 11 carries. UCLA finished with 466 total yards, 303 passing and 163 rushing.

Minnesota held the ball longer, 32:52 to 27:08, and had nearly as many first downs, 14 to 15. It could not turn that into yardage. The Gophers managed 296 total yards and converted 4 of 15 third downs. Lindsey went 19 of 37 for 205 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jalen Smith caught five passes for 85 yards, and Taylor ran 14 times for 46 yards and a score.

UCLA turned it over twice to Minnesota's once and still won by two touchdowns. Big plays covered the gap.

Against the number

UCLA closed at -3.5 and won by 14, so the Bruins covered comfortably. Most of that margin arrived in the fourth quarter. The game was tied with under 13 minutes left.

The total closed at 37.5, and the two teams combined for 54 points. The over cashed with room to spare. The market priced a low-scoring game, and the first half fit that at 10-10. The second half produced 34 points, 20 of them in the fourth quarter.

On the moneyline, UCLA closed at -170 and Minnesota at +142.

What's next

UCLA hosts Illinois on Friday, November 13, on Fox. The Bruins have now won four straight Big Ten games by at least 10 points since the 17-15 win at Oregon. Their passing game remains less consistent than the result suggests.

Minnesota falls to 5-4 after back-to-back losses to ranked opponents, 23-16 at Indiana and now this one. The Gophers visit Penn State on Saturday, November 14. They need one more win to reach bowl eligibility.
