No. 12 UCLA did not need many points on Saturday at the Rose Bowl. It needed the ball, and it kept it. The Bruins converted 13 of 20 third downs, held possession for 37:02 and beat Wisconsin 17-7 to move to 6-0.

UCLA turned the ball over twice and Wisconsin did not turn it over at all. That usually swings a game. Here it did not, because the Badgers could not throw. Wisconsin finished with 66 passing yards and went 3 of 10 on third down, and its offense was on the field for less than 23 minutes.

It was the second straight 17-point night for UCLA, a week after a 17-15 win at No. 13 Oregon. The Bruins are winning close, low-scoring games, and this was one more.

How it was won

UCLA scored on its first two trips that counted. M. Bhaghani made a 24-yard field goal with 3:07 left in the first quarter for a 3-0 lead. With 7:16 left in the second, W. Knight scored on a 1-yard run and Bhaghani's kick made it 10-0 at the half.

Wisconsin answered in the third. Colton Joseph ran it in from 3 yards with 8:17 left in the quarter, and G. Lahm's kick cut the lead to 10-7. That was the only time the Badgers reached the end zone.

UCLA closed it early in the fourth. Anthony Woods scored from 3 yards with 11:31 to play, Bhaghani added the extra point, and neither team scored again.

The yardage gap was wide: 384 for UCLA, 214 for Wisconsin. The Bruins had 20 first downs to 13.

Ty Dieffenbach completed 22 of 33 passes for 264 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Semaj Morgan caught five passes for 84 yards and Landon Ellis had two for 57. On the ground, Woods ran eight times for 39 yards and the touchdown, and Jaivian Thomas added 37 yards on nine carries. UCLA ran for 120 yards in all.

Wisconsin's offense ran almost entirely through Joseph. He carried 18 times for 71 yards and the score, and completed 6 of 16 passes for 66 yards. Abu Sama III ran six times for 34 yards. Jaylon Domingeaux led the receivers with two catches for 26 yards, and Chris Brooks Jr. had one for 17. The Badgers ran for 148 yards, which kept them in it, but with no passing threat they could not sustain drives.

Against the number

UCLA closed as a 1.5-point favorite and won by 10, so the Bruins covered comfortably. The moneyline closed at UCLA -122 and Wisconsin +102, a near coin flip that UCLA settled in the fourth quarter.

The total closed at 42.5 and the teams combined for 24, an under by 18.5 points. Given how both of UCLA's last two games played out, the market may need to take the Bruins' pace more seriously. Full prices and line history are on the game page.

What's next

Wisconsin (4-2) returns home on Saturday, October 24, to face No. 19 USC on NBC. The loss ended a four-game winning streak that included a 24-20 win at No. 13 Penn State and a 31-3 win over Michigan State. The question for the Badgers is whether Joseph can give them anything through the air against a ranked opponent.

UCLA (6-0) stays home the same day to host Michigan State, which Wisconsin beat by 28 two weeks ago. The Bruins have beaten two ranked teams in two weeks and will be favored to reach 7-0.
