Ryan Walters returns to West Lafayette on Friday night, less than two years after Purdue fired him. He is now Washington's defensive coordinator, and he arrives as Purdue is putting together its best stretch in years.

As Tom Dienhart of On3's Gold and Black reports, the Boilermakers have won back-to-back Big Ten games for the first time since 2022. That run, capped by a 41-13 win over Minnesota, has evened their record at 3-3 and 2-1 in the conference, and bowl eligibility has become a real topic in West Lafayette. Even so, On3 writes that Walters' homecoming is what most people want to talk about.

Purdue hired Walters to replace Jeff Brohm after the 2022 season. He was a 36-year-old defensive coordinator at Illinois and had never been a head coach. His first team went 4-8. His second won its opener and then lost its last 11 games. The final loss was 66-0 at Indiana, and he was fired on Dec. 1, 2024. According to On3, he never moved into the $4.2 million house he had built outside West Lafayette.

The coaching connections on Friday run deep. Kevin Kane, who was Walters' defensive coordinator at Purdue, is back in that job under Barry Odom, so Friday sets two coordinators who worked side by side against each other. The two also coached together at Illinois under Bret Bielema. Kane told On3 that Walters had been "a big catalyst in my career" and that the two are still friends. Odom has his own history with Walters, who worked for him at Missouri from 2015 to 2019. Odom eventually promoted him to defensive coordinator and gave him play-calling duties.

Odom does not want the week to be about any of that. On3 reports that he has kept his message on a one-game-at-a-time approach and on avoiding a letdown. The focus is on Tuesday's practice, not on last Saturday or the opponent's sideline.

The matchup is also a chance for some payback. Washington beat Purdue 49-13 in Seattle last season, one of 10 losses in a 2025 season in which the Boilermakers went 0-9 in Big Ten play. The two teams are headed in opposite directions this time. Washington is 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference after three straight losses.

Kickoff at Ross-Ade Stadium is 8 p.m. Eastern on Fox. Purdue is favored at -150 on Novig, one of the venues pricing the game. The spread is Purdue -3.5 and the total is 52.5, and the best sportsbook price on the Boilermakers is -156 at Pinnacle. Full prices are on the game page.

The stakes are clear for both teams. A Purdue win would make it three straight and move the Boilermakers above .500 before an open week, followed by a trip to Penn State to close October. A Washington loss would make it four straight defeats and leave the Huskies winless in conference play.
