Iowa won this game by being efficient on one side of the ball and taking the ball away on the other. Hank Brown completed 20 of 24 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. Wisconsin turned it over three times and finished with 235 total yards. The result was a 30-0 shutout of No. 25 Wisconsin at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, October 31.

It is Iowa's third shutout of the season, after 40-0 against Northern Illinois and 55-0 against Northern Iowa. This one came against a ranked conference opponent, a week after a 13-10 loss at Minnesota.

How it was won

Iowa scored on its first possession and never gave Wisconsin a way back in. Caden Buhr opened with a 24-yard field goal at 9:08 of the first quarter. Brown then found DJ Vonnahme from 4 yards with 1:02 left in the quarter, and Iowa led 10-0.

The second quarter ended with two more scores. Brown hit Tony Diaz from 4 yards at 1:30. Buhr then kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired, and Iowa went to the locker room up 20-0.

Vonnahme added a 2-yard touchdown run at 7:54 of the third quarter. Buhr closed the scoring from 54 yards at 2:16. Buhr finished with three field goals and three extra points, 12 points in all.

The box score shows the gap. Iowa outgained Wisconsin 362 to 235, with 20 first downs to 9. Iowa converted 8 of 15 third downs; Wisconsin converted 4 of 13. Iowa held the ball for 36:21, leaving Wisconsin 23:39.

Brown spread the ball around. Diaz caught 4 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. Vonnahme caught 5 for 54 yards and a touchdown, and scored again on the ground. Xavier Williams carried 20 times for 78 yards, and L.J. Phillips Jr. added 27 yards on 9 carries as Iowa ran for 140.

Wisconsin could not run at all. The Badgers finished with 52 rushing yards. Abu Sama III had 23 on 6 carries and Darrion Dupree had 22 on 5. Ryan Hopkins went 8 of 13 for 93 yards with an interception, accounting for about half of Wisconsin's 183 passing yards. Jaylon Domingeaux was the one steady target, with 6 catches for 86 yards. Tyrell Henry added 2 catches for 54.

The turnovers were the other half of the story. Wisconsin lost the ball three times to Iowa's one, and on a day when the offense managed only nine first downs, it could not afford any of them.

Against the number

Iowa closed as a 2.5-point favorite and won by 30, a comfortable cover. The closing moneylines were Wisconsin +114 and Iowa -135, so the market saw a close game and leaned only slightly toward the home side.

The total closed at 36.5. With 30 points scored, the game went under. Iowa nearly reached the number alone, but Wisconsin added nothing.

What's next

Iowa (6-2) goes to No. 20 Northwestern on Saturday, November 7. The Hawkeyes are 2-1 in road games against ranked or conference opponents this season, with wins at No. 18 Michigan and Washington and the loss at Minnesota.

Wisconsin (5-3) returns home to face Rutgers on Saturday, November 7, on BTN. The Badgers had won two of three before this game, including a 24-7 win over No. 16 USC. They will need a better day from the running game and fewer giveaways to start November on the right track.
