Indiana's Cignetti credits Kansas for the fourth-down call that beat Nebraska

Curt Cignetti says the fourth-down touchdown that won Indiana's comeback at Nebraska came from Kansas red-zone film. Next up: Ohio State.

Indiana won at Nebraska on Saturday with a fourth-down touchdown in the fourth quarter. Afterward, Curt Cignetti said the play came from another team. The Hoosiers coach told reporters his staff found the concept years ago while studying Kansas' red-zone film.

Roundtable Sports reported that Cignetti credited the Jayhawks and the creativity they showed while Jalon Daniels was their quarterback. Daniels now plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cignetti also praised the coach behind the idea, Lance Leipold. "And that guy's a good coach," Cignetti said, according to the outlet. He added that Indiana had borrowed the idea roughly five or six years ago.

Indiana calls its version "Burger King." The Hoosiers lined up in a tight formation that looked like a short-yardage run. Nebraska's defense was set to stop a push up the middle, and Marsh slipped behind it. Quarterback Josh Hoover found him wide open for the go-ahead score. Indiana had run a variation of the play against Northwestern earlier this season. This time it decided a road game against a team with one loss.

Marsh was the difference all afternoon. He finished with six catches for 187 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown earlier in the fourth quarter that helped bring Indiana back. The No. 7 Hoosiers came into Lincoln at 6-0 and are still unbeaten.

The concept fits with the offense Kansas built under Leipold and offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki. During Daniels' time in Lawrence, the Jayhawks leaned on unusual formations and misdirection to get their playmakers open. Cignetti is known for his own attention to detail. The fact that he went back to a Big 12 opponent's tape for a key call shows how widely his staff looks for an edge.

The win at Nebraska was a test. The next one is bigger. Ohio State comes to Bloomington on Oct. 17 in a game that will shape the Big Ten race and the College Football Playoff picture. The Buckeyes are favored at -170 on Novig, one of the venues pricing the matchup. Indiana is getting 3.5 points, and the total is 51.5. Hard Rock Bet has the best sportsbook price on Ohio State at -180. Full prices are on our Ohio State at Indiana odds page.

A 3.5-point spread on the road suggests the market sees Ohio State as somewhat better on a neutral field. It is far from a mismatch. For Indiana, the questions are whether Hoover and Marsh can produce explosive plays like they did against Nebraska, and whether the Hoosiers still have a trick play or two left. Cignetti has now shown he will run a borrowed play when the game is on the line. The Buckeyes will have seen the film.
