No. 4 Indiana closed as a 20.5-point favorite and needed overtime, plus a 60-yard field goal with two seconds left in regulation, to beat Minnesota 23-16 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The Gophers led 16-13 after Logan Drzewiecki hit from 60 yards with 19 seconds to play. P. McAteer answered from the same distance at 0:02. In overtime, Grant Wilson found Charlie Becker for a 25-yard touchdown, and Minnesota could not match it.

How it was won

Minnesota scored first on a 37-yard Drzewiecki field goal at 8:54 of the first quarter. Indiana took the lead about two minutes later when J. Hoover hit Nick Marsh for 9 yards and N. Radicic added the kick.

The Gophers went ahead before half. Drake Lindsey threw 39 yards to Roman Voss for a touchdown at 4:15 of the second quarter, and Minnesota took a 10-7 lead into the break.

The rest of regulation was kicking. Radicic tied it from 46 late in the third. Drzewiecki put Minnesota back in front from 51 early in the fourth, and Radicic tied it again from 34 at 3:05. Then came the two 60-yarders in the final 19 seconds.

The box score says Indiana should have won more comfortably. The Hoosiers outgained Minnesota 419 to 215 and had 21 first downs to 10. Becker finished with 8 catches for 149 yards. Wilson was 9 of 17 for 156 yards, and Lee Beebe Jr. ran 15 times for 84.

What kept it close: Indiana turned it over twice to Minnesota's once, and went 2 of 13 on third down. Minnesota was not much better at 3 of 15, but it made its kicks count.

Lindsey was 20 of 37 for 120 yards and the touchdown. TJ Thomas ran 6 times for 54 yards and Darius Taylor 7 times for 43. Javon Tracy led the Gophers with 7 catches for 40 yards.

It is the third straight low-scoring game for Indiana: 13-6 at Michigan, a 19-15 loss to Ohio State, and now this.

Against the number

Minnesota covered the 20.5 comfortably, losing by seven in overtime. The Gophers were +850 on the moneyline against Indiana's -1450, and came within two seconds of cashing it.

The total closed at 40.5. Regulation ended 16-16, 32 points, and the overtime touchdown brought it to 39. The under held by a point and a half.

What's next

Minnesota (5-3) hosts No. 7 UCLA on Saturday, November 7. The Gophers have now played two straight one-score games against ranked opponents, beating No. 15 Iowa 13-10 before this one.

Indiana (8-1) is off next week, then hosts USC on Saturday, November 14. The Hoosiers are still winning, but the margins have narrowed, and the market will have to decide how much that matters.
