Wisconsin handles No. 16 USC as the Big Ten board reshuffles in Week 8
Wisconsin beat No. 16 USC 24-7, Minnesota edged No. 15 Iowa, Indiana ground out a win at Michigan, and UCLA stayed perfect in Week 8.

The most consequential result of the Big Ten's Week 8 came in Madison, where Wisconsin took apart No. 16 USC 24-7 in USC at Wisconsin.
The market had the Badgers as a 3.5-point home underdog. They won by 17, held a ranked offense to a single touchdown, and moved to 3-1 in conference play. USC falls to 3-2, and with two league losses its path back into the title picture now depends on help from others.
It was not the only ranked team to lose on Saturday. The middle of the conference got more crowded, and the top got a little clearer.
What happened
Indiana at Michigan: No. 6 Indiana 13, Michigan 6. The Hoosiers won a low-scoring game on the road to reach 7-1 and 4-1 in conference. Indiana closed as a 7.5-point favorite and won by seven, so the price went Michigan's way even as the result went Indiana's.
Rutgers at Northwestern: No. 24 Northwestern 42, Rutgers 14. Northwestern was favored by 16.5 and won by 28. The Wildcats are 6-1 and 3-1 in league play; Rutgers drops to 2-5.
Oregon at Illinois: Illinois 21, Oregon 10. Oregon arrived as an 11-point favorite and left with an 11-point loss. Both teams are now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference.
Michigan State at UCLA: No. 9 UCLA 28, Michigan State 10. UCLA covered a 13.5-point number and stayed perfect at 7-0 and 5-0 in conference. Michigan State is 2-6.
Iowa at Minnesota: Minnesota 13, No. 15 Iowa 10. A 7-point home underdog, Minnesota won outright in a game that totaled 23 points against a posted total of 41.5. The Gophers are 3-1 in conference; Iowa falls to 2-2.
Rankings and standings
The AP rankings conference teams carried into Saturday: No. 3 Ohio State (up from No. 4), No. 6 Indiana (down from No. 5), No. 9 UCLA (up from No. 12), No. 15 Iowa (up from No. 17), No. 16 USC (up from No. 19) and No. 24 Northwestern (up from No. 25). Iowa and USC both lost to unranked conference opponents, and Wisconsin and Minnesota have cases to be considered when the next poll lands.
At the top of the standings, UCLA (5-0) and Ohio State (4-0) remain the only unbeaten teams in league play. Ohio State, 6-1 overall, did not appear on this week's slate. Indiana sits third at 4-1.
Behind them is a three-way tie at 3-1: Northwestern, Minnesota and Wisconsin. USC is alone at 3-2. Then comes a five-team group at 2-2: Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, Oregon and Purdue.
Michigan, Washington and Rutgers are 1-3. Penn State is 0-4 in conference and 3-4 overall.
The desk
Three of the four voices on the desk went unbeaten this week, and the underdog card did most of the work.
Lou "The Sharp" Marchetti went 2-0 with Michigan +7.5 and Wisconsin +3.5. The first cashed by half a point; the second was never in doubt. He is 15-7 on the season and still leads the desk.
Dr. Priya "The Quant" Raman also went 2-0, taking Illinois +11 and Minnesota +7. Both underdogs won outright. She is 13-10.
Marcus "Film Room" Dawkins swept with UCLA -13.5 and the under 41.5 in Iowa at Minnesota, which finished 18 points below the number. He moves to 12-11.
Vera "The Fade" Kowalski went 0-2. Rutgers +16.5 lost by 11.5 points against the spread, and Michigan State +14.5 missed by 3.5. She is 10-13, the only member of the desk under .500.
What's next
The race now runs through UCLA and Ohio State, the two teams without a conference loss, with Indiana one step behind and six teams at 3-1 or 2-2 still able to shape the order beneath them. Wisconsin and Minnesota turned upsets into a share of fourth place, while USC and Iowa have little margin left. The full Week 9 schedule, with kickoff times and current odds, is on the scores page.
