No. 23 Oregon trailed 14-0 after one quarter at Ohio Stadium on Saturday. Then it scored the next 38 points and left with a 41-28 win over No. 12 Ohio State.

The swing came on the ground and on third down. Dierre Hill Jr. ran for two touchdowns, including a 48-yarder to open the second half, and Dylan Raiola threw two more. Ohio State had more total yards, 413 to 395, but ran for 53 and committed the game's only turnover.

How it was won

Ohio State started fast. Bo Jackson scored on a 16-yard run at 9:56 of the first quarter and an 8-yard run with 1:20 left in it, both converted by Connor Hawkins, for a 14-0 lead.

Oregon answered with a 33-yard Gage Hurych field goal early in the second quarter. Hill's 9-yard run with 1:25 left cut it to 14-10, and Jamari Johnson's 2-yard run as the half expired put the Ducks ahead 17-14.

The third quarter belonged to Oregon. Hill broke his 48-yard run at 13:11 for 24-14, and Raiola found Dakorien Moore from 11 yards at 6:37 for 31-14. Raiola hit Brandon Smith for a 15-yard score at 12:02 of the fourth, and it was 38-14.

Ohio State's late push came too late. Luke Fahey threw 13 yards to Jeremiah Smith at 3:25 and ran in the two-point try to make it 38-22. Hurych added a 40-yard field goal at 1:08, and Fahey's 15-yard touchdown to Nate Roberts with 44 seconds left, followed by a failed two-point pass, set the final.

Raiola finished 25 of 40 for 257 yards and two touchdowns. Hill ran 13 times for 75 yards, and Tradarian Ball added 24 on six carries. Moore caught seven passes for 56 yards and a score; Brandon Smith had three for 52 and a score. Oregon went 8 of 17 on third down, did not turn the ball over and held the ball for 30:01.

Fahey threw for 360 yards on 36-of-50 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. Jeremiah Smith caught seven passes for 133 yards, and Devin McCuin had nine for 84. Jackson managed 48 yards on 11 carries after his two early scores, and Ohio State finished 6 of 14 on third down.

Against the number

Ohio State closed as a 7.5-point favorite, and Oregon covered by winning outright. Anyone holding the Ducks on the moneyline at +260 was paid; the Buckeyes closed at -325.

The total closed at 44.5, and the teams combined for 69, an over by 24.5 points. It was settled before the fourth quarter: the Raiola-to-Moore touchdown made it 31-14, already 45 points.

The early 14-0 start looked like the favorite's script. From there, the underdog outscored Ohio State 41-14.

What's next

Oregon is 6-3 and has won two straight, following a 34-26 win over No. 20 Northwestern with this one. The Ducks host Michigan on Saturday, November 14, on FS1.

Ohio State is also 6-3 and has lost two in a row, after an 18-30 loss at USC. The Buckeyes host Northwestern on Saturday, November 14, on Fox. Their run game, held to 53 yards here, is the first thing to watch.
