Maryland raffles a semester of free tuition to keep students in seats for Illinois
Maryland will raffle a semester of in-state tuition to students who stay late at SECU Stadium on Saturday as the 2-5 Terps host Illinois.

Maryland has a new way to keep its student section full through the fourth quarter on Saturday: a shot at a free semester of college. One student at the Halloween home game against Illinois will win a raffle covering in-state undergraduate tuition for spring 2027, but only if they are still in SECU Stadium when the winner is drawn.
The New York Post reported that students must claim a ticket, scan it at the gate and then scan a QR code shown on the video board to enter. Five finalists will be brought onto the field in the fourth quarter, and the winner will be picked there. The Post put the prize at up to about $8,000. ESPN, citing the university's email to students, gave the exact figure: $5,507.50, the in-state rate for that semester.
The school says the timing has nothing to do with the record. Rachel Palmer, Maryland's assistant athletic director for fan development and marketing, told WBAL-TV that the idea came together over the summer, the Post reported. She described early exits as a problem for the whole sport, telling the station that football is "a pretty long game and they have a lot of other things they can be doing." Still, the promotion arrives at a low point. Maryland has averaged 42,264 fans across four home games, 15th of 18 in the Big Ten, according to the Post. And the program fired Mike Locksley last week. CBS Sports reported that Locksley went 39-54 in more than seven seasons and that Maryland owes him a $9.75 million buyout. CBS also reported that Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, recently moved up to defensive coordinator, will make his debut as interim head coach against Illinois.
What it means for Saturday
The students who stay will be watching a team that has fallen apart over the past month. Maryland opened 2-0 by beating Hampton 62-0 and UConn 38-14. Since then it has lost five straight: 35-26 to Virginia Tech, 54-3 to UCLA, 48-23 at Nebraska, 45-16 at No. 5 Ohio State and 37-30 to Rutgers in Locksley's last game. Over that run the Terps scored 98 points and allowed 219. That works out to the 24.2-point average losing margin the Washington Times noted. ESPN counts 12 straight Big Ten losses, and Maryland has not won a conference game since beating Wisconsin on the road in September 2025. The Terps are coming off a bye, which gave the new staff some time to prepare.
Even so, the market sees a close game. On this site's board for Illinois at Maryland, which covers 11 venues, Illinois is favored at -125 on Novig. The best price on the Illini anywhere is -122 at FanDuel, so there is little gap at the top. Novig has Maryland at +120. The spread is Illinois -2.5, priced at -102 on Novig, with Maryland +2.5 at even money. The total sits at 54.5 on Novig, and other venues range from 54 to 55.5. Sportsbook hold runs from 3.4% to 6.4% on the moneyline and up to 7.0% on the spread.
With a line under a field goal, Saturday may come down to the fourth quarter. That would suit a marketing department hoping students stick around.
