Four field goals got this game to overtime. One touchdown ended it. Josh Hoover's 4-yard run in the extra period gave No. 6 Indiana a 13-6 win at Michigan Stadium on Saturday. Michigan did not score in overtime.

It was a game decided by inches of field position and a lot of punting. Neither offense reached 225 yards. Michigan had the ball longer and gained more yards. Indiana ran it better and made the one play that mattered.

Indiana moves to 7-1, one week after its 19-15 loss to Ohio State. Michigan falls to 4-3, and its three losses have come by a combined 14 points.

How it was won

Indiana's Nicolas Radicic opened the scoring with a 22-yard field goal at 3:44 of the first quarter, then added a 34-yarder at 9:31 of the second. That 6-0 lead held into the third, when Michigan's T. Butkowski hit from 29 yards at 2:22.

The tying kick came late. Butkowski made a 26-yarder with two seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime at 6-6. In overtime, Hoover kept it himself from the 4, and Radicic's extra point made it 13-6.

The box score is a near-even split. Michigan out-gained Indiana 224 to 212, led in first downs 16 to 11 and held the ball for 33:44. Indiana's edge was on the ground, 131 rushing yards to 57, and in turnovers, where Michigan gave it away twice to Indiana's once.

Hoover had a hard day throwing: 8 of 18 for 81 yards with an interception. The running game carried the Hoosiers. Turbo Richard had 68 yards on 19 carries and Lee Beebe Jr. added 56 on 12. Charlie Becker caught three passes for 32 yards and Nick Marsh two for 25.

For Michigan, Tommy Carr completed 20 of 32 for 167 yards with an interception. JJ Buchanan caught six for 57 and Hogan Hansen four for 34. The run game never got going: Jordan Marshall had 26 yards on 12 carries and Savion Hiter 15 on 10.

Third down was a problem for both sides. Indiana converted 4 of 14, Michigan 6 of 20.

Against the number

Indiana closed as a 7.5-point favorite and won by 7, so Michigan covered by the half point. The cover only existed because Butkowski's kick with two seconds left forced overtime, and a touchdown with an extra point there could only produce a seven-point margin.

The total closed at 43.5. With 19 points scored, including the overtime touchdown, the under came in with plenty to spare.

On the moneyline, Indiana closed at -298 and Michigan at +240. The favorite won, though it took an extra period to do it. Prices and the full closing board are on the game page.

What's next

Indiana returns home to face Minnesota on Saturday, October 31, on CBS. The Hoosiers have won all four of their home games this season against non-Ohio State opponents, and the offense will want a cleaner passing day after this one.

Michigan travels to Rutgers the same day, Saturday, October 31, on BTN. The Wolverines are 4-3 and have lost three of their last four, each by a single score.
